Halo Gets Media Talking About National Holistic Pet Day

August 30 was National Holistic Pet Day and once again, Halo got pet parents – and media – talking about holistic pet food.

To honor holistic pet day, Halo surveyed nearly 850 pet parents about what they believe the term “holistic” means when it comes to pet food. The survey results, along with Dr. Donna Spector’s article “Let Food Be Thy Medicine” were well received, landing Halo in the media – and right in the middle of the National Holistic Pet Day discussion.

The survey results were featured in a press release that landed on top news outlets like Yahoo!, Sacramento Bee, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Business Journal and 46 more, reaching an estimated 12.5 million consumers.

Reporters and bloggers also picked up the story in outlets like Dog Splendor, Bocci’s Beefs and Romeothecat.com, to name a few.

Grain Free Spot’s Stew® Awarded Editors Choice by Pet Product News

Pet Product News recently announced that Spot’s Stew® Dry Dog-Grain Free Surf ‘n Turf and Spot’s Stew® Dry Cat Grain Free Hearty Chicken Recipe were both chosen to win the publication’s coveted Editors’ Choice award. While the publication received hundreds of submissions this year, only 43 products were selected for this honor.

Pet Product News editors had this to say about why they chose these two Spot’s Stew formulas: “Halo's Spot's Stew Grain Free dry food recipes, Hearty Chicken for cats and Surf ‘n Turf for dogs, received unanimous and enthusiastic reports from all of our testers—both two- and four-legged. The owners loved that both recipes are not only grain-free, but also free from chicken meal and any other rendered animal parts. The pets, which included one exceptionally finicky cat, obviously loved the taste as they all scarfed up the food without hesitation every time it was served.”

Halo Vegan Dog Formula Spurs Passionate Media Commentary

Halo's recent announcement of a new, all natural Vegan Garden dog food formula generated a wide response from the media, broadcasting the news to more than one million readers of "green" living and pet-focused press. Outlets like Tails, Inc. and Pet Food Industry ran the story on their sites, while green media like Mother Nature Network shared the news with their more than 750,000 monthly readers interested in healthier living.

The intense media interest reflects Halo's own belief: this special diet is a fantastic choice for very specific consumers - those individuals who are vegetarian/vegan and want to feed their pet that way or those who have a dog with a medical issue that prevents them from eating meat (e.g. severe food allergy, etc.).

Media Storm Reflects Widespread Love for Uncle ChiChi

One of Halo's special friends, Uncle ChiChi, a miniature poodle who was likely the world's oldest dog (his owners estimated his age to be between 24-26), passed away on January 17.

In 2010, ChiChi stole hearts across the globe in a Good Morning America appearance where his owners revealed that the little poodle's secret to longevity was his favorite food, Halo's Spot's Stew.

After The New York Times first shared news of ChiChi's passing with its 1.1 million daily readers, others like the Associated Press, The Gothamist, and many more also paid tribute to the poodle.

Many stories mentioned the finicky ChiChi's preference for Spot's Stew and a  Freekibble.com donation of Halo made in his honor.

An estimated 16.5 million people read about Uncle ChiChi's passing when nearly 170 outlets ran the Associated Press article. Leading outlets including The Wall Street Journal, MSNBC, The Washington Post, San Francisco Examiner, The Miami Heral, ABC News, the Boston Globe, and many others covered the story.

A video of ChiChi enjoying Halo made the rounds as well, appearing in The Huffington Post, The Gothamist and AOL Pawnation, among others, with more than 20,000 views in just a few days.

We are all fortunate to have known this special little dog, and we're thankful to the media for sharing his remarkable story and honoring his memory. Rest in Peace, Uncle ChiChi.

Halo Leads Celebration of National Holistic Pet Day

August 30 is National Holistic Pet Day and Halo led the pack in media coverage across the globe.

To mark the occasion, Halo surveyed 800 pet parents about their holistic lifestyles. The survey results, along with Dr. Donna Spector's tips for holistic living, were a hit, landing Halo coverage in many leading pet media outlets, including Catster (reaching Dogster Media's 7 million monthly viewers) and Dogtime (40 million monthly visitors).

The media- and consumer- enthusiasm around National Holistic Pet Day is great news for pet parents who want to make healthy choices for their pets.

According to Halo's survey, the top pet parent behaviors for promoting holistic well being were regular exercise (70% of respondents) and feeding their pets all-natural food (75% of respondents). Interestingly, 70% of respondents say they avoid ingredients prohibited for humans (such as chicken meal or other rendered animal parts) and 48% use natural supplements for skin, coat or digestive care. A large number (59%) of participants said they choose green/non toxic household products and 54% play mind-stimulating activities and games with their pets.

While only 6% of respondents had heard of National Holistic Pet Day, many of those surveyed planned to take this opportunity to make positive lifestyle changes. View survey results here.

Halo and Ellen "Deliver" on Animal Rescue Stamps Goal, Donating 1 Million Meals to Shelter Pets

Dozens and dozens of media outlets celebrated Halo's year in philanthropy -- as we reached our goal of donating 1 million meals of Halo Spot's Stew to shelter pets in 2010. Mission accomplished!

We were inspired to make this groundbreaking donation in celebration of the United States Postal Service's 2010 social awareness stamp, "Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet." The campaign, first announced on the Ellen DeGeneres Show on March 17, 2010, officially launched in April when the stamps became available for purchase nationwide.
Said DeGeneres, "At Halo we want to promote healthy living for pets and eating good food is a big part of that. So, we agreed to donate one million meals of Halo to shelter pets. I mean, imagine, an animal in a shelter, in a cage, lonely - a good meal is kinda all they have to look forward to, until you adopt them!"

Halo partnered with a number of non-profit organizations to donate the 1 million meals, including Freekibble, The Humane Society of the US, ASPCA, Pets for Patriots, and The National Canine Cancer Foundation amongst others.

Well over 100 shelters were served throughout the course of the campaign, including Caboodle Ranch in Jacksonville, FL; San Francisco Animal Care & Control; Rescue Ink, ASPCA New York; Humane Society of Tampa Bay, Search Dog Foundation, The Cat House on the Kings in Parlier, CA; and Humane Society of Central Oregon, the shelter at which Freekibble founder, Mimi Ausland, volunteers.

Halo Becomes Freekibble's Exclusive Kibble Donor!

Since Ellen DeGeneres had 12-year-old Freekibble founder Mimi Ausland on her show in 2008, Mimi has become an animal rescue super star. Halo is proud to now be her exclusive food provider! STAMPS TO THE RESCUE

Scores of Media Outlets Cover Halo / USPS Stamps to the Rescue Campaign & 1 Million Meal Donation

The unveiling of the USPS Animal Rescue stamps and Stamps to the Rescue Campaign on March 17 – including Halo’s plans to donate 1 Million Meals of Halo Spot’s Stew to pets awaiting adoption – set off a firestorm of media coverage. Here’s a sketch of this campaign’s exposure in March.

First, the Post Master General of the U.S. appeared on The Ellen Show to unveil the stamps, and Ellen announced the 1 Million Meals plan. The same day, the US Postal Service placed 2’x3’ posters (saying “Halo buys the food for 1 million shelter pets”) and counter cards (saying “Give Shelter Pets a First Class Meal”) in every US Post Office (over 30,000 of them). Ads appeared on USPS.com (with 1.2 million visitors/day), in hundreds of thousands of USPS online order packages, and on a new site, Stampstotherescue.com.

Then the firestorm hit. Stories about the campaign appeared in USA Today, the LA Times (here and here), People (People Pets), DogChannel.com, CatChannel.com, E! Online, Examiner.com (stories 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5!), About.com, and so much more. Click the green bars below to see additional coverage. Additional media links »
