Over 800 pet parents filled out HALO, Purely for Pets' survey on www.holisticpetday.com, with natural food, regular exercise, and animal advocate (and Halo co-owner) Ellen DeGeneres topping the list of what's being celebrated on National Holistic Pet Day, August 30.
Before taking the survey, less than 6% of participants had ever heard of National Holistic Pet Day, so it's exciting to see that holistic education is underway! To celebrate, Halo is awarding $100 prize of Halo products to one lucky participant.
Here are some of the results:
- Ellen DeGeneres was cited by a whopping 75% of pet parents as "the best role model" for the holiday. Betty White also made a strong showing with 12%, with Marley (from Marley and me) also getting votes. Even though Hulk Hogan and Regis Philbin are noted animal lovers, they didn't get any votes here. Top write-in celebrities included Jane Goodall, Mimi Ausland from Freekibble.com and Alicia Silverstone.
- Providing regular exercise and all natural food are the top-two pet parent behaviors for promoting holistic well being, cited by 79% and 75% respectively. Among dog parents, 86% cited regular exercise.
- Surprisingly, avoiding ingredients prohibited for humans (such as chicken meal or other rendered animal parts) was cited by 70% of participants – despite the appearance of chicken meal in many top natural pet foods.
- Other top choices included choosing green/non-toxic household products (59%), playing mind-stimulating activities and games (54%), providing natural supplements for skin, coat or digestive care (48%), using all natural shampoo and grooming products (48%), and regular dental check ups (44%). Among cat parents, 63% chose green household products.
- Pet parents also plan to change their behaviors to celebrate National Holistic Pet Day. Top planned changes include switching to an all natural food, more exercise, playing Freekibble.com or Freekibblekat.com (to feed natural food to homeless pets), helping a local shelter, avoiding ingredients prohibited for humans (such as chicken meal or other rendered animal parts), and visiting their local pet food or natural food store to learn more about holistic living.
- Participants weren't afraid to speak their minds in the comments section! Here are some highlights:
- "I wish more vets would embrace holistic treatment instead of just treating symptoms. Exploring alternatives like homeopathy, acupuncture, acupressure, etc. could go further to treat our furry family than just western medicine."
- "Great Idea! The questions and selections sure give you pause and help stimulate your mind to think 'outside the box'..... thanks. This was not only fun, but very informative."
- "I've always fed my two dogs an all-natural diet and as a result they have been super healthy with no stomach or skin issues. YEAH for great food!"
- "Thank you for caring what goes into our animal companions."
- "Continue trying to educate the public, especially the children, about the proper ways to interact with, care for and view our pets."
- "Holistic is the best way to go for your pets, put quality food in them and you wont have to pay that money out to a vet."
- "I just wish vets would be more aggressive about talking to people about healthy natural foods for their pets but it appears they may be uneducated when it comes to that."
