Maddie the Balancing Dog: a Photo Series
By Caroline Golon
View Slide Show
In a 365-day journey, Theron Humphrey and his rescued Coonhound, Maddie, are traversing the country with one goal: to capture life in America by meeting and photographing one new person every day.
But Theron found an unexpected subject in two-year-old Maddie. “I started taking nice photos of her – in the grass, in the sun. But she’s a funny dog, too. She would just go and stand next to a tire for no reason, so I took a photo of her.”
When a friend challenged Theron to see if Maddie would stand on four soup cans, Theron says, “That really triggered it. I said, ‘I bet she would!’” Maddie did not disappoint, rising to the challenge with her remarkable balancing skills.
Now in his series, “Maddie on Things,” Theron uses his iPhone to photograph Maddie balancing on all kinds of objects – from cars to trash cans to tree stumps. He says Maddie doesn’t seem to mind the photographs or funny poses.
Theron photographs Maddie nearly every day, when he sees something interesting or good lighting. The series, he says, offers people a fun break from every day life. “For me, it’s something that makes me smile. Here’s a really great dog with really great balance and hopefully it makes other people smile too.”
